Why all the sitting?

What has caused this sedentary revolution? Environmental factors have the largest influence on physical activity.  These factors include;

  • Urban sprawl
    • The expansion of living areas outside of dense urban areas to more remote areas
    • This results in a high dependency on cars for transportation
  • Office jobs
    • There has been a large increase in the number of office jobs and a large decrease in the number of industry and farming jobs
  • Lack of sidewalks
  • Lack of green space and recreation resources
  • Access to public transportation
  • Lots of car traffic
    • Results in an area feeling unsafe
  • Pollution or poor air quality

All of these factors allow people to easily erase physical activity from their day. But it can still be easily incorporated into your day by adding little bits of movement to your routine.
